  • History of Muay Thai
    In 1774, after the Burmese had taken control of the Thai city, Ayuthaya surviving Thai soldiers were taken back to Burma as prisoners of war. One of these prisoners was a Muay Thai warrior known as Nai Khanom Tom. ​ Legend has it that during a relgious celebration in Burma, the king of Burma, Lord Mangra, promised to release any prisoners that could defeat Burma's finest warriors. ​ Nai Khanom Tom, known for his ability as a fighter, stepped forward and used his Muay Thai skills. He amazed everyone after performing the pre fighting ritual, the Ram Muay, including his opponent who claimed to be so distracted by this dancing ritual that he lost the match. Thus, Lord Mangra challenged Nai Khanom Tom to nine more of Burma's warriors. Nai Khanom Tom defeated them all and was awarded his freedom and the freedom of others. ​ In honour of Nai Khanom Tom's great triumph, his memory is celebrated every year in March 17th as National Muay Thai Day.
